CAROLYN SINGH was born, in a surprise move, in 1947 under the name “Carolyn Diana Schmitz”. Carolyn is often referred to as, “Carrie.” As a child Carolyn moved frequently, but the common thread was her attention to light in every new location. This may be detected in her attitude towards light in her work.
She has had one person shows at civic, non-profit and university galleries in Kentucky, Texas, New Mexico, Delaware and Minnesota. Her work has been featured internationally in Mexico and Germany; in several regional invitational shows in both Texas and Delaware; in numerous competitions throughout the southwestern United States including: The New Mexico Watercolor Society, Albuquerque, New Mexico; El Paso Art Association, El Paso, Texas; Rio Bravo Watercolorists, El Paso, Texas; Texas Watercolor Society, San Antonio, Texas; Arizona Aqueous, Tubac, Arizona; Hill Country Arts Foundation, Ingram, Texas; and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. She has earned Signature status in the Texas Watercolor Society, the New Mexico Watercolor Society, and the Rio Bravo Watercolorists.
She has won numerous awards and her work is held in both public and corporate collections including those at the El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas; El Museo de Arte del INBA, Cd. Juarez, CHIH, Mexico; the University of Minnesota, Department of Art, Printmaking, Minneapolis, Minnesota; The National Bank of Commerce of San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas; and the Bank of El Paso, El Paso, Texas.
In October of 1996 she was one of two American artists featured in an exhibit, “Transpositions”, in Berlin, Germany. In 1999 she was featured in the book, Contemporary American Oil Painting, published by Jilin Fine Arts Publishing House, Changchun, PR China. In 2000 her work was included in, Desert Echo Women Illuminate the Sacred, published by The Women’s Museum, Dallas, Texas in Association with the Smithsonian Institution. In 2002 she was featured in the fall issue of the Tulane University, “Tulane Review”, New Orleans, LA. In 2010 one of her paintings was featured on the cover of Light In the Morning: A Collection of Poems on Loving, Living and Being by Vijay Singh.
Like many contemporary artists, Singh works in several different media, often combined in the same piece. She frequently works in series around a given theme, subject, or attitude. The series dictates the use or abuse of media. At the present time she is working concurrently in painting, ceramics, and jewelry design.
She started painting seriously under the direction of Raymond Hendler, Herman Somberg, and George Morrison at the University of Minnesota in the 1960s. During this time she also started to make ceramic vessels under the direction of Warren McKensie. At the University she was very well trained in multiple media and, therefore, feels comfortable tackling most problems, with the exception of welding.
She taught several years for the Museum School of the El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas. She has also taught for the Home School, El Paso, Texas; the Department of Continuing Education and the Center for Life Long Learning, both programs of the University of Texas at El Paso. She continues to accept a few students in her studio for private teaching, portfolio development, and career coaching.
Singh attended the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was awarded a BA in Studio Arts and a BFA in Painting and Drawing in 1972.
In August of 2000 she moved with her husband of 37 and counting years, Vijay Singh, to Lexington, Kentucky where she maintains her current workspace, Laudable Mud Studio. In 2008 she established her website, laudablemudstudio.com. In September 2009 she started LusterWear, a shop on Etsy.com.
