The title derives from a phrase first used, apparently, in 1599 as a stage direction - meaning "all on one's own".
My response to the individual figure depends on the mood of the model. The figures do not convey a resemblance to the physical appearance of the model. The majority of these paintings and drawings were done using the same model. The difference in "style" has to do with the emotional content of the piece.
